Afghan president telephones PM Imran, discusses peace process

ISLAMABAD: Afghan President Ashraf Ghani here on Sunday telephoned Prime Minister Imran Khan and discussed Afghan peace process, ARY News reported.   

PM Imran Khan and Afghan President Ashraf Ghani discussed regional and internal security situation in Afghanistan  and recent efforts for peace and reconciliation process in Afghanistan during the telephonic conversation.

PM Imran Khan said that peace in the war-torn country vital for the people of Afghanistan and Pakistan. He said, “We have to focus on economic growth for regional stability, progress and prosperity.” PM Imran Khan assured the Afghan president the Pakistan would continue its support for Afghan peace process and added that Afghan leadership themselves have to decide their future.

During the telephonic conversation, PM Imran Khan invited Afghan President Ashraf Ghani to visit Islamabad which he accepted.

Earlier, in an attempt to restore durable peace in war torn Afghanistan, Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi here on May 1 had said that Pakistan was making sincere effort s for success of the Afghan peace talks.

Addressing the seventh round of Pakistan-Afghanistan track-II dialogue in Islamabad, Mehmood Qureshi had said, “I have visited different countries and also held several meetings with US Special Representative for Afghanistan Reconciliation Zalmay Khalilzad for peace in Afghanistan.”
