New on SI: Packers Advance To NFC Championship Despite Seahawks Late Game Surge

The Packers are heading to the NFC Championship game where they’ll take on the 49ers. Green Bay defeated the Seahawks 28-23 at Lambeau Field in the NFL’s final divisional playoff game.

The NFC North Champions jumped out to an early 21-3 lead in the first half but Russell Wilson and Marshawn Lynch helped the Seahawks climb back into the game with three straight drives that resulted in a touchdown. But unlike their 2014 Playoff match-up, there was no ultimate comeback for Seattle. As Sports Illustrated’s Kalyn Kahler pointed out, this Packers roster had tremendous turnover since that playoff collapse, including rookie head coach Matt LaFleur who became just the fifth coach in NFL history to get to 13 wins in his first season.

Quarterback Aaron Rodgers and wide receiver Davante Adams dominated the Seattle secondary. Rodgers and Adams connected for eight catches which amounted to 160 yards and two touchdowns. Adams’ 160 yards is a Packers postseason record.

Rodgers finished with 243 yards and two touchdowns.

Green Bay closed out the regular season with a 13-3 record and thus the two seed in the NFC. They now head to the San Francisco Bay Area where Rodgers grew up rooting for the 49ers. The victory over the Seahawks gave the Packers their 35th playoff win which ties them with the Dallas Cowboys for third most all-time. San Francisco’s 30 playoff victories is fifth most all-time. There are nine Super Bowl Championships between these two franchises (Packers four and 49ers five). There’s just one Super Bowl Championship between the Chiefs and Titans who will battle in the AFC Championship game.
